How To Overcome Times When You're Not Motivated To Work On Your Business

Sep 13, 2022

There are days when I positively spring out of bed, ready to tackle my day.

Picture me in a sparkly blue gown, puffy-cheeked squirrels tying my sash, birds adding lovely sparkles to my hair, me singing sweetly, “When you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Aaaahhhhh!!

Then, there are other days.

Days when I hit snooze on my phone one too many times, then drag myself to my desk to stare blankly at my computer.

Vacillating between cycles of being highly motivated and cycles when you don’t feel like working on your business can be very frustrating.

“Why can’t I feel motivated all the time? My business is my livelihood. Why don’t I feel like working on it?” As a business and money mindset coach, I hear this all the time.

I’m going to put your mind at ease by showing you why you go through these cycles and how they can be a positive, guiding force for your business.

Cycles of high motivation and low motivation are natural.

Cycles are natural and normal in your business. They aren’t necessarily good or bad, they just are.

We find cycles and rhythmic patterns in all aspects of nature.

The seasons, the ocean tides, our sleep, our hunger, the lunar cycle, day and night.
These cycles bring renewal to the Earth, refresh our ecosystems, and sustain all living beings.

As women humans, we are subject to ebbs and flows, too.

Our bodies are designed to work in cycles.

We intuitively work through the continuous flow of contraction and expansion.

You can use your intuitive, cyclical nature to move through times when you just don’t want to work on your business.

Your very nature means you can embrace the things that make some cycles so challenging.

Nature has prepared you to embrace the impermanence of things and be flexible enough to meet the needs of all – your clients, your business, your children, your animal family, your partners, etc.

As women we are naturals at moving through the different phases of our projects, our business, and our lives.

Embracing these natural cycles will help you deal with times when you have no motivation.

When you pay attention to and become more in sync with the different cycles of nature, you automatically become connected with something bigger than yourself.

It isn’t a YOU problem! You’re not the only one who feels an inward pull, not wanting to put yourself out there!

You're not an anomaly, a lone entrepreneur struggling to find the energy to work on your business.

You are a part of Nature – with a capital N – and we’re all in this together.

That is really great news, because as a part of Nature, you can receive the support of something that is bigger than yourself.

It’s about being connected and part of the flow. You can begin to regulate, organize, and regenerate your own personal nature and organic rhythm.

It’s okay to listen to the cycles.

That doesn’t mean you’ll hide in a cave or stop working. It simply means you’ll move forward in different ways.

I really listened to my natural cycle and rhythm this summer and slowed way down.

Just like you, I had so much to do in my business.

But pushing through, being outward and extroverted in my energy was not in the cards for me.

Rather than beat myself up for not being able to muster up the motivation, I came home to myself and my family.

I did not do all the things that I “should have been doing” in my business – creating content, videos, blogs, being visible and being a guest on podcasts.

It just wasn’t in alignment with my energy. I had to listen.

It is much easier when we go with the natural flow of our bodies rather than against it. There is a sense of ease, allowance, and trust in what is.

One of my clients shared her experience:

“It took me a while to realize that my mood swings and productivity were related to my menstrual cycle and to the lunar cycle. Once I realized this, I connected with the cyclical nature and embraced that I HAVE a cyclical nature like all other beautiful beings on the planet.

“I stopped pushing against myself and what felt like an enormous rock to move some days.

“I listen to my body and my moods. Sometimes I do more outward-facing work, like connecting with others in my business through client calls, running promotions, and making new offers.

“Other times during the month, I listen intuitively to my needs and reflect on my offers, direction, and things I would like to create in my business. Sometimes those phases take longer than I expect.

“I’ve learned to give myself the grace of expansion and contraction to allow for what I need.”

Having this awareness and acceptance of natural cycles in your body, life, and business allows you way more freedom and ease in all areas!

As a business coach for soulful women, I’d love to help you learn how to embrace that flow and move forward with it.

Women experience four phases in our cycles.

When you understand these phases and the physical, psychological, and emotional changes you experience in each of them, you’re able to move forward, even during times when you lack motivation or don’t feel like working on your business.

1. There may be times during the day, week, month, season, or year when you notice that your physical and mental abilities are sharp and keen.

This is a phase for:

  • Mental focus.
  • Concentration.
  • Learning new things.
  • Creating your packages.
  • Promoting your offers.
  • Setting goals.
  • Getting organized.
  • Outlining action steps

2. There may be times during any identified rhythm or cycle you notice where you are extroverted and naturally connect and relate with others.

This is the time for:

  • Networking.
  • Team meetings.
  • Collaborating on projects.
  • Client service time.
  • Bigger things like VIP Days.
  • Running retreats.
  • Sharing your ideas.
  • Giving or getting feedback from friends, mentors and coaches.
  • Feeling good about what you’ve done and what you are currently doing.

3. There is a phase in your identified cycle where energy is flowing based on your emotions.

At this time we are really in tune with our feelings and can be wildly creative and inspired intuitively and from spirit.

This is the time to:

  • Be creative.
  • Solve problems.
  • Make big decisions in your business.
  • Let your mind wander to bring forth the intuitive insights you have been asking for.

Think second chakra here and indulge your senses through dark chocolate, delicious tea or tantalizing coffee, music, movement, yoga, dance, and daydreaming.

Allowing nature and your intuition to guide you as you take care of yourself allows everything else to fall into place.

4. Then there is a phase where you will have markedly lower energy both physically and mentally.

Your intuition is fully awake here, and so is spiritual connection.

This is a great time to:

  • Rest.
  • Be introspective.
  • Restore and renew for the next phase that is coming.
  • Reflect on what is working and what isn’t.
  • Clear out the things that don’t serve you.
  • *Declutter.

*Try this practice when you declutter: Remove something from your environment that you no longer need. Put your attention on that now empty space and ask the Universe to energetically fill that space with whatever is needed for your highest good.

Hurray! Those cycles of not being motivated are no longer negative!

They’re invitations to lean into that cycle to work more introspectively, giving you direction when energy and motivation return!

Decoding the dos and don’ts for each phase can help women sync into their superpowers at the right time.

Each natural cycle of your own energy, body, life, and business holds a space for all the things that create fulfillment, satisfaction, and success:

  • Setting goals
  • Planning action
  • Taking real steps in alignment with your goal
  • Building relationships and community to help realize the goal
  • Tapping into vast creativity to improve what you’ve done
  • Reviewing your progress

The wisdom of nature and her cycles in our lives and business is an opportunity to shift from struggle to flow.

Consider this an invitation to align with the dynamic cycles of the Earth and embrace the duality of expansion and contraction.
